Sleep Apnea in Women

Obstructive Sleep Apnea in women is much more common than previously thought and is severely under-diagnosed. Why?

First of all, many men don’t complain to their wives that they snore! It’s just a fact. Many of my sleep apnea patients (men) say to me, “Hey doc, now that you’ve fixed me, I need you to fix my wife!”

On top of that, many women are in denial about their snoring. It’s not cute to be known as a snorer. When they fill out questionnaires in my office and they say they snore, it’s mostly followed up with, “THEY say I snore, but I don’t believe them.”

Here are a few suggested questions for your bed partner:

  1. Do I snore?

  2. Do I stop breathing when I’m asleep?

  3. Do I gasp for air while I’m sleeping?

Believe it or not, when I was about to be tested I asked my husband these questions and he said YES, YES and YES to all three!! I never knew that because he didn’t want to complain.
